An Analysis of the Objects and Contents of Oral Health Education for Elementary School Students in Some Regions

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to serve as a basis for more successful oral health education in elementary school, by examining to what extent the current oral health education was contributing to increasing the oral health knowledge of elementary school higher graders in some regions, and by determining what kind of oral health education could serve to promote the oral health of elementary schoolers.
The subjects in this study were fourth, fifth and sixth graders in elementary school in the city of ¡°C¡±, South Kyongsang Province. A survey was conducted from November 10 through December 20, 2000, and the responses from 290 students were selected for analysis, except incomplete answer sheets. The instrument used in this study was questionnaire prepared by reviewing the Oral Health Job Handbook, the Guide for the Management of School Oral Health Room, and the latest literature on oral health education. The questionnaire included 46 items extracted form the above-mentioned data, which consisted of 3 items covering general characteristics and 43 regarding oral health education in elementary school. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS (statistical package for the social science). The frequency and percentage were calculated to see what kind of oral health education was actually being offered for each grade, and t-test and one-way ANOVA were conducted to find out how the oral health knowledge of the elementary schoolers was being affected by gender, school year and the number of family members. The findings of this study were as below :
1. concerning the general characteristics, the elementary schoolers investigated were in their fourth year (26.6%), fifth year (38.6%) or sixth year (34.8%). By gender, 48.3% were boys, and the girls accounted for 51.7%. By the number of family member, 9.7% had a family of three, and 54.1% were respectively from a family of four. 22.4% had a family of five, and for 13.8%, there were six or more in their families.
2. The students got a mean of 4.00 in ¡®the choice of toothbrush with the proper-sized head¡¯, which is part of the education for first graders, and got a mean of 4.11 in the knowledge about ¡®the chewing role of the teeth among its various roles, part of the education for second graders. They got a mean of 4.07 in the item that read one should brush his or her teeth to remove debris. All this could be interpreted that they had a good knowledge on the object of elementary school oral health education.
3. By school year, the fifth graders had a better understanding of the followings than the fourth and sixth graders : ¡®the choice of the right toothbrush for each of them¡¯ (F=10.52, p<.001), ¡®mouthwash good for the teeth¡¯ (F=12.64, p<.001), ¡®the three primary oral diseases¡¯ (F=13.07, p<.001), ¡®malocclusion (F=8.84, p<.001), and ¡®periodontal diseases¡¯ (F=12.10, p<.001). The difference between them was statistically significant.
4. By gender, the girl students made out ¡®the role of the teeth¡¯ better than the boys, and the difference between the two groups was significant (t=-2.27, p<.05). The boy students outperformed the girls in the comprehension of ¡®the process of dental caries¡¯, and the difference between the two was significant (t=2.07, p<.05).
5. As for the number of family members, those who were from a family of five or six or more had a better understanding of ¡®the role of the teeth¡¯ than the others from a family of four or three, and the difference between them was significant (F=2.79, p<.05).
